Save the Waves Coalition (STW) is an international nonprofit that works in coalition with diverse organizations dedicated to protecting surf ecosystems. STW have coined the term ‘surfonomics’, which brings together surf and economics. Several ‘surfonomics’ studies have been carried out to determine the financial benefits that surfing brings to local economies in places as diverse as Mavericks (California) to Lobitos (Peru). While these case studies often do not account for the non-market values of surfing (those that cannot be bought or sold, like well-being or social cohesion), estimating direct expenditure in items such as in food or accommodation, is a starting point to understanding the importance of surfing for local communities.
